The route ahead on Kilimanjaro

Climb Kilimanjaro on Lemosho route.

Lemosho route offers remote and spectacular trekking with dramatic gorges and views of West Kilimanjaro. Climb Kilimanjaro on Lemosho route and follow quiet forest trails before reaching Shira Plateau. The trail then joins the south circuit route (Machame) before finally reaching Stella Point and the start of the summit ascent. The final push at high altitude is tough but your goal, Uhuru Peak, is within reach. It’s too cold to stay on the summit for long. After a short celebration begin the descent on a direct trail to reach Mweka camp.

Lemosho route offers all round dramatic views of Kilimanjaro, surprises, challenges and is an enjoyable Kilimanjaro climbing experience.

Lemosho route can be accomplished in seven days but taking eight days is advised as a better option for acclimatizing your body in preparation for a successful summit attempt.

8 trekking days.

Arrive into Kilimanjaro airport and transfer to your Moshi hotel for overnight. Dinner and additional airport transfers are included only if requested.

Day 1:

The day begins with a long drive through village communities to Lemosho Gate for registration (2100 meters). Rejoin the vehicle for a short drive to the trail head. In bad weather you may need to walk. Start hiking along a narrow forest path to reach Mti Mkubwa (big tree) campsite in 3 to 4 hours (2,750 meters).

Day 2:

On leaving the forest you will notice the trail gets steeper as it enters the moorland zone towards Gane and Marshall One Valley. The trail becomes a more gentle grade trek across the high altitude Shira Caldera to Shira Cave Camp. Look out for a glimpse of the infamous Arrow glacier in good weather (3,500 meter in 6 to7 hours).

Day 3:

Hike eastwards on Lemosho route to cross the moorland meadows of Shira Plateau and Shira Cathedral to reach Shira Camp 2 for dinner and overnight camping (3,840 meters).

Day 4:

Ascend to the base of the Lava Tower on a rocky and rugged path for a lunch break (4,630 meters in 5 to 6 hrs). This is a short distance ascending detour designed to help your body to acclimatize to the high altitude. From the Lava Tower descend 680 meters to Baranco camp site and your tent. The camp is situated in a valley below the Western Breach and the Great Baranco Wall (3,950 meters in 2 to 3 hours).

Day 5:

Start with a rough scramble up the side of Baranco Wall (it’s not as difficult as it looks from the base camp) to top out just below the Heim Glacier. The trail continues heading into the Karanga Valley and the camp site where you will stay overnight. This is a short hiking day of 2 to 3 hours to help your body to acclimatize to the high altitude. Dinner and overnight camping (Karanga, 4000 meters).

Day 6:

Leave Karanga Camp to begin hiking through alpine vegetation. The vegetation becomes noticeably more sparse as the trail ascends. If there is no cloud cover you may get a good view of Mawenzi peak in the distance. After 4 to 5 hours hiking you reach Barafu campsite to rest. After dinner you will be briefed by your guide on the Kilimanjaro summit ascent before retiring to your tent to prepare your equipment and catch some sleep (Barafu, 4,550 meters).

Day 7:

Expect a wake-up call from your guide around midnight with hot drinks and snacks provided by your summit crew. The Kilimanjaro summit ascent is started just after midnight on a frozen path. To begin with the climb up to Stella Point is steep but then the route flattens out along the crater rim. The trail ascends again and eventually reaches the ice-capped summit of Uhuru Peak after a couple of hours hiking (5,895 meters). Enjoy a well earned rest and take your celebration photos before beginning the descent. Return to Barafu camp for breakfast. Take the opportunity to rest before heading down the trail to Mweka campsite (3100 meters). This is a bone tiring hike over 12 hours.

Day 8:

After an early breakfast start your final descent with a 4 to 5 hour scenic hike on a rocky path to Mweka gate. Join the waiting vehicle for the journey back to your hotel in Moshi (dinner can be included on request). Successful summit climbers will receive a Kilimanjaro climb certificate.

Transfer to Kilimanjaro airport to join your departure flight (included in your climb package) or on to another activity (priced separately).
